From 1914 through 1972, Connaught Laboratories was a unique self-supporting public service institution within the University of Toronto, dedicated to the research, development and production of public health biological products, particularly human vaccines. It also played a critical role in the development and large scale production of insulin, heparin and penicillin. After its privatization in 1972, and through various mergers and acquisitions, especially after 1989, Connaught Laboratories evolved into the Canadian component of the global Sanofi Pasteur organization, the vaccines division of Sanofi, the French multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Paris.
