Carillon Newspaper Company Information
General information
The Carillon has been the University of Regina Student Newspaper since 1962.
It is published on Thursday no fewer than 11 times during both the fall and winter semesters and periodically throughout the spring and summer.
The story of The Carillon, passed down from editor to editor for over 40 years:
In the late 1950s, the University of Regina planned the construction of several new buildings on the campus grounds. One of these proposed buildings was a bell tower on the academic green. If you look out on the academic green today, the first thing you’ll notice is that it has absolutely nothing resembling a bell tower. A 160-foot bell tower was to be constructed, tall enough so that it could be seen from anywhere on the campus and from across the lake. As it turned out, this signature structure was never built. Its sole legacy was that it inspired the students to name their newspaper The Carillon.
The university never got a bell tower, but what it did get was The Carillon, a newspaper that serves as a symbolic bell tower on campus: a loud and clear voice belonging to each and every student.
