General information

Not all men were/are free to grow a beard. Throughout the course of history, societal attitudes toward male beards have varied widely depending on factors such as prevailing cultural-religious traditions and the current era's fashion trends​. Beards may be prohibited in jobs which require the wearing of breathing masks, including airline pilots, firefighters, and the oil and gas industry. Beards were once taxed in England and Russia that made it impossible for civilians with poor economic status to grow one, if they wished.

The purpose of this photography project is to remind the viewers about the circumstantial 'denial of freedom' to grow a beard that a few men encounter(ed) and to embrace the beauty of the manly facial hair of those men, who have taken efforts in growing them.

The photographs will be captured in both digital and analogue film photography medium. As an artist, my final goal is to release a book on the successful completion of the project. I will provide timely updates on how this project is proceeding.
